How does the 1 year free subscription work? Will I get it with a 2nd hand monitor?

I am considering purchasing a 2nd hand Nanit Pro monitor. Will I still get 1 year free subscription (i.e., is it activated by a new user account?). Or is there a specific code or something hat comes with the product, so the previous owner would have already used it up?
