Baby won't go into deep sleep!

Hi! My husband and I are completely out of ideas and now our relationship is starting to suffer.

We have an 8 week old boy, he is breastfed. During the night time he won't go to sleep and stay asleep. He'll pass out grunting, fall asleep for 10 minutes, wake up and start the entire thing over again. In 8 weeks we've maybe had him sleep longer then a 4 hour strech three times. Naps we can get 20-1 hour from him, but he is difficult to get to sleep then also.

He sleeps in a bassinet in our room, swaddled, with a pacifier, fed, burped and changed prior to sleep, white noise, fan circulating air, temp is usually around 70 degrees and humidity is kept around the 50% mark.

Any advice?

I'm suppose to go back to work in a few weeks and I don't know how we will continue living with the lack of sleep and both work productive full time jobs.

  • How do you think he feels about the swaddle? My LO started fighting it around 7-8 weeks. We were using the Swaddle Me velcro ones, he would try to wiggle his arms free, and if he couldn’t he would cry. We switched to the Love to Dream Swaddle Up and he’s happier because he can put his hands in his mouth. Second, do you put him down completely asleep or drowsy? The whole “drowsy but awake” never worked for us until recently and he’s 12 weeks. If you can master it, it helps. Lastly look into Taking Cara Babies 0-3 month class. It’s only 70 bucks and it helped me.

  • My son was like this, turned out his tummy did not like my breastmilk no matter what I ate or didn’t. It could be colic too, or not liking swaddle.

  • Hi! I had a similar issue with my son. We stopped swaddling and things did get better in a few nights. We also moved him to his own room and crib (right next to our room) and that helped too! I also think time. He’s my second baby and I’ve noticed once they hit about 12 weeks things start to get better on the sleep front. Hang in there! It’s purely survival mode until they get a little bit bigger and consolidate sleep.
