How to self soothe 4 month old

hello, I’m in search of some serious help. My son is about to be 4 months in a few weeks and we haven’t gotten to the self soothe method yet.! We rock him to bed until he is in a deep deep sleep and Even so, he wakes up a few hours

last time I tried to start this he cried so so much… any advice ?
